TOP 5 States for letterboxes

From: an_irish_mum (e_r_nurse32@yahoo.com) | Date: 2002-12-13 16:46:57 UTC
Ok --I should be doing something else..I really don't have time to be
doing this but--I was curious to see how many boxes there were in
different states, so I spent about 15 minutes gathering the following
numbers ...

Numbers per the current list:

1.Connecticut 828 (We obviously have too much time on our hands-LOL!)

2.Ohio 291

3.Massachusetts 243

4.Oregon 216

5.Virginia 207

So does another state think they can catch Connecticut? Just figure
out how many boxes per 100 square miles! Or figure out how many
boxes per million population! We've got them all beat.

Actually, the best measure might be #boxes/pop _density_. Low population
density is probably one of the biggest barriers to developing viable
letterboxing, and, conversely, New England's relatively high pop density
is a big advantage. (Also, small area is an advantage regardless of
population; this of course is a component of pop density)

Running the numbers again, based on numbers in my 1998 almanac, and not
bothering to look at any of the states other than the 5 (I mean, who has
the time, gives) --

OR - 7.29 (boxes per person per sq mi)
CT - 1.22
OH - 1.09
MA - .32
RI - .21

Of course, to be fair, one should look at OR west of the cascades only,
etc, but I'd say OR has done pretty well for itself ...

Not that this has any more meaning or validity than anything else, but
I find interesting the factors that contribute. Of course, since some
single individuals account for huge chunks of a state's production,
all data are meaningless anyway :-)

Cheers

are you kidding, Mansfield, CT alone has more boxes then the nearest
state LOL I don't think another state will ever catch CT (but never
say never) .... actually, I believe in quality not quanity. I have
done some great letterbox series in both RI & CT.

I think everyone everywhere deserves a lot of credit for their hard
work and imagination in planting letterboxes. An interesting
statistic would be the increase in letterboxes per year (or month)
Just think, this hobby is barely 4 years old in the US. Can you
imagine how many boxes will be out there in another 4 years??

---Dang! I seem to have missed out on a lively topic. I can't even
put in my 2 cents. Ryan and Randy covered that!
So Irish ER Nurse (sorry can't quite remember your ID) where does
Maryland fit in on your list? I hope we made the top 10 at least!
